Interesting approach to an important topic

The set is a great idea as a small gift. I bought the card set for my mother because she is interested in gender medicine. She found the set very informative and beautifully designed.

Informative creative card game

A very informative card game that conveys in-depth knowledge about gender-sensitive medicine in a creative and engaging way.

It encourages patients to ask critical questions and demand gender-appropriate treatment. It changes the way we look at conventional medicine.

Experience differences and discrimination in a playful way

The deck of cards Gendermedol playfully raises awareness of gender-specific differences and bias in medicine - a problem that affects us all.

With illustrated case studies on topics such as endometriosis, ADHD and heart attacks, it provides a comprehensive overview of how medical conditions differ between the sexes and what consequences gender bias can have. Puzzle stories and practical advice encourage discussion - whether with friends, at the doctor's or in the pharmacy.

What does Gendermedol contain?

19 illustrated case studies

highlight gender bias, the current research gap (gender data gap) and discrimination in clinical pictures.

Each card tells a short story that raises questions, such as: What happened? What led to different treatments? Why were the complaints not recognized or taken seriously?

On the back of each card you will find the solution and further information.

3 action jokers

give further advice and support.
How can you address the problem?
What's the best way to ask?
And where can you find out more?

With each small step, the topic becomes more and more public a change in awareness not only in medicine is long overdue.

Packaged as a medicine

inklusive eines Beipackzettels, der Hintergrundinfos liefert und über die Anwendung alleine oder in der Gruppe aufklärt.

Possible side effects include increased interest in gender-sensitive medicine, questioning of experienced situations, as well as astonishment, anger, frustration, curiosity.

What is it about?

Currently, medicine is still too often oriented towards the “one-size-fits-all” person and thus treats all patients the same.
But there are numerous significant differences, and equal treatment has life-threatening consequences, because diseases have no gender, but many faces!

For example, medications work less effectively and lead to undesirable side effects twice as often in women; diagnoses are delayed due to “atypical” symptoms or treatments are influenced by gender bias.

Although the problem has been increasingly recognised since the 1980s, this knowledge is rarely put into practice. A major change in awareness is needed. Gendermedol is designed to make the subject accessible to everyone and also to sensitise and empower patients to ask questions and demand appropriate treatment.

Medical research and teaching still default to treating patients as cis men. However, there are many differences between the sexes, both biological (e.g. anatomy, hormonal balance) and socio-cultural (e.g. lifestyle, stereotypes). These differences influence how diseases develop, are diagnosed, progress and are treated, and lead to side effects and dosage problems with medications.

Drugs are processed and work differently and would require gender-specific dosing. Cis women are twice as likely to suffer adverse side effects, and the second most common reaction is a lack of effect. Trials are still too rarely analysed specific for sex and gender, the classic test subject remains male.

Diseases are also standardised as 'women's diseases' or 'men's diseases'. The symptoms of the other sex are then unknown or atypical, and diagnosis is distorted and delayed.
For example, women are more likely to report secondary symptoms such as nausea and dizziness when they have a heart attack. As a result, their heart attacks are more likely to go undetected and they are more likely to die as a result.
The autism and ADHD diagnosis is also a male model; the diagnosis is based almost exclusively on cis-male study data. Girls and women can show completely different symptoms and hide them better due to socialization.
For other illnesses, particularly mental illnesses, the problem is reversed. For example, although the symptoms of depression can vary greatly, common diagnostic questionnaires refer only to female symptoms. Men are diagnosed more poorly and late, and their suicide rate is three times higher.

Stereotypes and expectations also influence treatment. Cis-men with the same severity of symptoms are examined and treated more intensively and their symptoms are interpreted as organic, whereas women's symptoms are perceived as more psychosocial, even hysterical. They were given sedatives after the same operation, whereas men were more likely to be given painkillers.

Until the 19th century, women's complaints were dismissed as hysteria and attributed, for example, to a 'bored, wandering womb'.

Background

The deck of cards Gendermedol was designed as part of my master's thesis in interaction design. Gender-sensitive medicine has become an issue close to my heart, and with this card deck I want to spread the word and make the injustices in medicine tangible.

Thanks to the support of many backers on Kickstarter, I was able to successfully fund and produce the first decks.

I am always happy to receive your feedback or questions! 😊
